The house is made of beautiful solid natural red cedar. The wood does not have any staining or painting (generally preferred by Bluebirds). The natural beauty is enhanced by the outside of the house being unfinished, unsanded rough exterior. The inside wood surfaces are smooth, finished wood.
The roof can be raised at any time for observation. There is a side door that can be used for observation. However, the main advantage of the side door is to clean out the nest after the baby birds have flown away.
The Bluebird does not like a perch. So, there is no perch. The Bluebird grabs the surface of the outside of the house. The grooves on the front of the house below the entrance hole make it easier for the bird to grab the surface. These grooves are also on the inside of the house for the same purposes as the outside; but, it also gives the assistance needed for the baby birds to motivate out of the house.
BJM also inserts a metal ring behind the decorative wood hole. This prevents varmints from eating their way into the hole to eat eggs or babies.
